Based on the 2005 Western novel by Robert B! Parker# ” Appaloosa” is centered around lawman Virgil Cole (Ed Harris) and his deputy Everett Hitch (Viggo Mortensen)# two friends who are hired to defend a lawless 1880s town from a murderous rancher (Jeremy Irons)! Their efforts are disrupted and their friendship tested by the arrival of a woman (Renée Zellweger)!
Jeremy Irons plays a rich landowner who is wanted for murdering the town marshal! That’s when Virgil Cole (Ed Harris) becomes the new Marshal# and his buddy Everett Hitch (Viggo Mortensen) becomes his deputy! Once they start going on a new manhunt# Virgil meets a girl Allison (Renee Zellweger) who only complicates things!
It’s basically the same kind of storyline that one would find in a John Ford Western: Using “the road” as a tool of exploring boundaries whilst at the same time# looking for the bad guy so vigilante justice can be served! Yes# there were some violent gun fights# but they were stylized# not too graphic! Just like the gunfights in a John Ford Western!
Admittedly# I thought the film moved pretty slow at first# but that’s typical with Western films! The real highlight of the film was the acting! Ed Harris was an excellent actor# as well as director! But Viggo Mortensen really made the movie worth seeing! And you’ll agree with me when you see it!
